South Africa: HSFSA Launches Mobile Clinic

For the first time ever, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa (HSFSA) has launched its first mobile clinic in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township.

Launched on Monday morning, 12 April, at the Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids centre, the clinic will cater to the more vulnerable members of the community – specifically, those with preventable non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, increased cholesterol levels, diabetes, and strokes.

Approximately 225 South Africans die from heart diseases every day, while nearly 70 die of strokes.

Professor Pamela Naidoo – the CEO of HSFSA – said: “Our trained nurses are ready to conduct Health Risk Assessments on members of the communities where they work, and provide them with helpful information and advice on how to manage their health.”

She added: “Our mobile clinic will assist in educating, informing, diagnosing and referring patients, and in doing so, lessening the strain on our overburdened healthcare system.”

It is the HSFSA’s aim to extend the programme throughout South Africa in due time, whereby these mobile clinics will travel to impoverished communities that lack the means to access basic screening and healthcare.
